There is a sentence we hear very often in a first message: “With a body like mine, can a wedding dress even look good?” That question is not about the dress. It is about having tried a few places, worn things that did not fit, and come away believing that beautiful wedding dresses are not meant for you. The truth is the opposite: a ready-made dress that does not fit is not your body’s fault. It is the size chart’s — a chart built around an average shape that does not exist.

Why sample dresses so often do not fit

Ready-made dresses are built to a size chart, and each size is a fixed set of ratios between bust, waist and hip. Real bodies do not follow those ratios. Plenty of brides are one size at the bust, another at the waist and a third at the hip. Forced to pick one, you pick the size that fits the widest part — and everything else is left slack.

The shop will say it can be taken in. But alterations can only take in, never let out, and every time something is taken in, the designer’s original proportions are broken a little further. The result is a dress you can wear but that no longer looks the way it was meant to.

How made-to-measure handles it

With a made-to-measure dress there is no size chart at all. The pattern is drafted from your measurements from the start, so there is no “slightly tight here, slightly loose there”.

But fitting is only the minimum. What makes the dress look good is the technique.

Breaking the waist into finer panels

This is the technique we use most for plus-size brides, and it is one that cannot be applied to a ready-made dress. Instead of one continuous body, the waist is divided into several narrow panels joined together. Every seam is another chance to curve the fabric along the actual line of the body — and to draw the eye where we want it to go.

One dress we made this way was for a bride measuring 106 at the bust and 86 at the waist. Breaking the waist into finer panels is what created the line she wanted, and it is only possible when the pattern is drafted from scratch.
