If you have ever tried on a ready-made wedding dress and felt swallowed by it, you are not alone. Ready-made size charts are built for an average frame. Smaller than that and a familiar set of problems appears: the waist seam lands below your real waist, the bodice runs too long, the train spreads into an ocean of fabric, and the whole proportion of the design is pushed out of place.

Can it be altered? Partly

Alterations can reduce size. They cannot move where the lines sit. And on a petite frame, position is what decides everything.

The waist seam has to land on your waist

This is the most important detail and the most often ignored. On a ready-made dress the waist seam sits at a fixed distance from the shoulder. On a bride with a short torso, that distance puts the seam below her real waist — and immediately the legs look shorter and the whole figure is pushed down.

When the pattern is drafted for you, the waist seam is placed on your actual waist. That alone changes the visible proportion, before a single decorative detail is discussed. For many petite brides we raise the waist slightly above the natural line to lengthen the leg — but that is a decision made per person, not a formula applied to everyone.

The scale of the detail has to shrink with the wearer

A lace motif that looks beautiful on a tall frame can look heavy on a small one. The same flower at the same size occupies a completely different share of two different bodies. Working to measure, we choose lace whose motif suits your scale, and cut it along the curve of the body.
