After the wedding

Caring for your wedding dress

A couture wedding dress is almost always lace, tulle, silk, or hand-beaded — all of which dislike hot water, rubbing and being hung the wrong way. This page is what to do, in the order you will need it.

Three moments that matter

  1. 01On the day

    Blot, never rub

If something spills, press a clean white cotton or paper towel gently onto it, working from the outside of the mark inwards. Rubbing spreads the mark and roughs up the lace fibres. If you need moisture, use cold water only.

  2. 02The first 48 hours

Let it dry fully on a hanger, then take it to be cleaned

Perspiration, white wine and the sugar in soft drinks leave almost nothing visible at first, then turn brown over the following months. The longer they sit, the harder they are to remove. Photograph each mark and write down what it was, so you can tell the cleaner.

  3. 03Long term

Store it flat, away from light, and open it once a year

A dress that was cleaned properly can still yellow if it is stored badly. Acid-free tissue, a cotton bag, somewhere dry and dark. Once a year, open it, move the folds to a different place and put it away again.

Things not to do

  • A washing machine, even on the gentlest cycle
  • Chlorine bleach, or detergent containing optical brighteners
  • Hot water — heat sets protein marks such as perspiration and food into the fibre
  • A tumble dryer
  • Ironing directly onto lace, tulle or beading — heat melts the adhesive and shrinks tulle
  • Storing the dress in a plastic cover — plastic traps moisture and yellows the fabric
  • Hanging a heavy dress from thin shoulder straps — the shoulders stretch out of shape

Quick guide by type of mark

MarkDo this nowNot this
Lipstick, foundationBrush off the loose powder, then blot the rest with a white paper towelDo not wet it — water spreads the colour
Red wineBlot up everything still wet, then sprinkle a thin layer of salt to draw it outDo not pour hot water or white wine on it
Food oil or greaseSprinkle cornflour or talc, leave 15 minutes, then brush it offDo not rub it with water — the oil goes deeper
Mud on the hemLet it dry completely, then brush it off with a soft brushDo not scrub it while wet
Perspiration at the underarm and waistHang it somewhere airy to dry, and mark the spots for the cleanerDo not spray perfume or deodorant onto it
InkBlot it dry at once and touch it as little as possibleDo not use alcohol or makeup remover

If you have to treat a small mark yourself

Only on plain fabric: silk, satin, undecorated tulle. Never do this on beaded lace or hand embroidery.

  1. 1Test first on a hidden edge — an inside seam or the spare fabric at the hem
  2. 2Mix cold water with one or two drops of a neutral, colourless, unscented soap
  3. 3Use a white cotton cloth and blot from the outside of the mark inwards. Do not rub
  4. 4Blot again with a clean damp cloth until no soap is left
  5. 5Let it air dry somewhere with moving air, never in direct sun

By fabric

Lace

Catches on everything. Take off rings, watches and bracelets before you touch the dress. One pulled thread has to be re-sewn by hand.

Tulle

Shrinks with heat. Use steam from 20cm away or more, and never rest an iron on it.

Silk and satin

Water leaves a ring. If one spot gets wet, dampen that whole panel evenly and let it air dry, and the ring will not show.

Beading, crystals, sequins

The adhesive dissolves in solvent and softens with heat. Tell the cleaner clearly that the dress is hand-beaded.

Silk or brocade ao dai

Holding its shape matters most. Hang it on a padded hanger inside a cloth bag, and do not leave it folded under pressure.

Hanging and storing

  • Use the ribbon loops sewn at the waist, if your dress has them, rather than hanging it by the shoulders
  • A wooden or padded hanger with a broad shoulder
  • A plain white undyed cotton bag — never plastic
  • Acid-free tissue paper inside the folds and through the body of the dress
  • A flat box instead of a hanger if the dress is heavy
  • Somewhere dry, dark and stable in temperature — not an attic, not a basement
  • Open it once a year, move the folds and put it back

Taking the dress with you

  1. 1Fold it along the large seams with tissue paper between the layers
  2. 2Put it in a cloth bag first, then into the case
  3. 3If you are flying, carry it with you rather than checking it in
  4. 4Unpack and hang it as soon as you arrive — the sooner, the fewer creases
  5. 5For creases: hang it in a bathroom with warm steam for 15 to 20 minutes

When in doubt, ask before you do anything

If LAM’S made your dress, send Phuong a photo of the mark and of the fabric label before you take it anywhere. LAM’S does not clean dresses, but we know what yours is made of and can tell you exactly what to say to the cleaner.
